An Apex Legends player has undertaken a test to try and figure out how skill-based matchmaking works in the popular battle royale title, posting their results on Reddit. Multiplayer gamers are not fans of the use of matchmaking algorithms to match players of similar skill levels, and in an attempt to combat it, one Apex Legends player has decided to test it out on a smurf account and claims that they know how it works.

Respawn Entertainment have yet to address calls from the community to revert the system, or at least reveal how it works to the public, so for the time being, it appears that Apex Legends fans will remain in the dark about how they are placed into matches. When I first got hired to work as a matchmaker for an elite dating service in New York, I assumed I’d have to transform myself into a version of Patti Stanger. Thinking about her blunt confidence, decisive nature, and occasionally brash tone made me nervous. After a year of dabbling in matchmaking as a hobby — I set up my college classmates and wrote about their blind dates for a column on my school’s student-run blog — I was about to put my skills as a matchmaker to the test in a professional setting.

I was terrified. On my first day of training, I was just 21 years old; my most formative romantic experience to date was getting dumped at a grocery store. Did I really have what it took to make it as a matchmaker? During a series of training sessions, my fears were mostly put to rest. I learned that matchmaking is more of an art than a science, and that every matchmaker approaches it differently.

In multiplayer video games , matchmaking is the process of connecting players together for online play sessions. Playlists are automatically-managed streams of online play sessions that players can join and leave at will. A set of predefined rules is used to determine the configuration of each session without the need for human input.

Games will normally offer a choice of themed playlists e. Since playlists are handled by servers controlled by the game’s developer it is possible for them to be changed over time. When a player selects a playlist they join a pool of other people who have made the same choice. The playlist server then either connects them to an existing session or creates a new one. Parties are groups of players who are treated as a single entity by matchmaking systems. Lobbies are menu screens where players can inspect the upcoming game session, examine the results of the last, change their settings, and talk to each other.

In many games players return to the lobby at the end of each session. In some, players joining a session that has already started are placed in the lobby until the start of the next. As lobbies consume very few resources they are sometimes additionally used as a “holding pen” for players while a suitable host for the coming session is found. Lobbies created by playlists often have a countdown timer before the session starts, while lobbies created by a player generally transition at that player’s discretion.

How does our matchmaking system work?

Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that matches a player to and against other players in games. The system estimates how good a player is based on whom the player beats and to whom the player loses. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives pre-made teams tougher opponents than if each player had queued alone or other premades of a similar total skill level Riot Games Inc.

Once a match has started, the lobby is closed – new players will not be Only accounts that have been given access to private matchmaking.

Weighted Average is a blend of the average of all players, then skews that average to the highest-ranked player in the party. A party of similarly ranked players will have a Party Skill close to their average rating. Party Skill will now be weighted closer to the skill of the highest-ranked player in the group than in previous Seasons. Why is this necessary? Our data shows that teams where all the players have similar skill ranks all Silvers , tend to lose more often to a team where one player is ranked higher than the average team with a Gold player.

Teams with a much wider spread between higher and lower-ranked players tended to win even more often the higher-ranked players carried the team. Example: Teams made of players close in skill Silver 1 and Silver 3 have average win rates.

In the past, we have released a post touching on how the MMR system works. We are updating it to properly reflect the current system in Rainbow Six Siege. Your skill represents your ability to win a game. Comparing two teams’ skill gives you the probability that one team will win against the other. The higher the difference, the more likely a given team is going to win. When two teams with the same skill levels are matched up with each other, they both have an equal shot at winning.

The estimation of your skill is probabilistic. In general, the more games you play, the more information we have about you, and the more confident we are about this estimation. The lower the uncertainty, the higher the confidence. This led to confusion as the play experiences of players of different ranks would vary greatly.
