Jessica, as the founding director of Ballet In Cleveland, how did you first get the idea to bring world-class ballet dancers to the Midwest?

This experience perpetuated me into a lifetime love-affair with ballet. I immediately took to the library and checked out every book I could about ballet, along with every cassette tape yes, cassette tape of ballet scores from Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and more. Seeing Balanchine performed sealed the deal. When our local performing arts center, Playhouse Square, discontinued its Ballet Series, the opportunity to see world-class ballet without going out of town was eliminated.

When I reached a crossroads in my life and knew that I wanted and needed a career-change, I saw the lack of professional ballet performances and events in our area as my oyster. I developed the kind of company that I wished existed and that I would like to be a part of: one that brought the best ballet dancers in the world to my home of Cleveland. Seeing works of Balanchine like I saw on PBS twenty years ago on a Cleveland stage because of the efforts of my company is an absolute dream come true.

His version follows the young god as he is ushered into adulthood by the muses of poetry, mime, and dance. Working with Diaghilev was an unparalleled apprenticeship for Balanchine and, until his own passing in , Balanchine always recognized Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes as the reason he became a great choreographer. Ultimately, though, these ballets remain beautiful, important, and fascinating works of art that are vital and need to be kept alive.

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about a simple nightingale who saves the life of a Chinese emperor, the work was originally an opera composed by Igor Stravinsky in Diaghilev was not satisfied with the opera, though, so in , he commissioned Stravinsky to reduce the score to a one-act ballet with a libretto by writer Boris Kochno.
